2002 BASIC FRAMING SKILLS AND INSULATION WORKSHOP
9:00 am-11:30 am
Jim Vanderhaar
TEACHING AIDS:
- 10 page handout with drawings, text, definitions quiz;
tool stations; house scale model;
- video tape(s); sample full-size wall sections;
marker board instructions; hands-on
- demonstrations; Q & A sessions.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:
- To learn basic skills and concepts about the framing process including:
jargon, tool use, wall assembly, construction safety.
- To empower you to "read" a tape measure, snap a chalk line, use
a level, operate a circular saw/chop saw.
- To give an overview of Habitat's raise-the-roof (R-T-R)
- To learn the basics of insulation and caulking; why and how to do
it properly.
VERY BASIC "FRAMING" - How does a Habitat House come together?
Each task defined; your part as a volunteer
Video; show two minute, stop-motion "Raise-the-Roof" video;
questions?
Pass around sample blueprint(s); review floor plan basics
Using the markerboard, scale model and handout drawings explain wall
building
components and wall assembly;
Framing terms; plate; layout, stud, jack, header, tee, cornerpost,
cripple, rough
opening, plumbing wall, etc.
TOOL EMPOWERMENT:
The tape measure: see drawing "the magnified inch"; (handout
samples of wood to measure)
Hammer basics - the "no-choke" grip, the swing, the finish,
toenailing
Snapping a chalkline - how to hold, how to snap
Power saws - saw safety, the circular saw, the chop saw, you
try cutting on the line
The "framing square" and speed square
The level and how to "read" it
for leveling and "plumb"
How to "mark" lumber
MOST BASIC CONCEPTS YOU'LL NEED TO KNOW:
"square", "plumb", "level", "crown-up", sixteen inches on center,
24 "o.c., diagonal brace,roof truss, etc.
HANDS-ON DEMO - Raising two walls: (for ALL participants)
Snap two chalklines on floor to form a "square" (i.e. 90°) corner
Pre-position one wall, raise the wall, plumb the wall, brace the
wall
Raise second wall; plumb second wall, fasten to 1st wall
Re-check for square and plumb corner; brace for safety
BREAK - ten minutes for coffee and donuts
INSULATION THEORY AND PRACTICE
Hands-on install R-13 in wall cavity
The staple gun - loading the staple gun
Cutting insulation
Hands-on install Miraflex R-19 in between floor joist sample
Problems we've had;
Caulking - the caulking gun; loading: the "bead"
