Saw Safety

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • If you’re not familiar with a type of saw, ask for a lesson or get a demonstration until you feel comfortable.
  • Secure a firm footing before sawing. Clear away small blocks of wood and debris before you start.
  • Never talk to or touch the person operating a saw. Wait until the saw stops.
  • Wear eye protection; such as safety goggles
  • No loose neck wear, sleeves, or jewelry
  • Saw guards must be working. Don’t tamper…OSHA inspector is looking over our shoulder.
  • Keep hands and fingers away from the path of saw cut.
  • Beware of saw kick back and what causes it. Stand aside from saw path, so that your body is not behind the cat.
  • Know how to avoid pinching the saw blade and its cause.
  • Make all adjustments, such as saw table height, tilt angle, etc. while the power is off.
  • Inspect saw blade frequently for sharpness of teeth.
  • Allow the saw motor to come up to speed before starting to cut.
  • Make sure blade is not in contact with work piece before switch is turned on.
  • Never cut or re-cut very small pieces. It is better to re-cut from new stock than to risk cutting a finger. Use a chop saw for smaller pieces
  • Hold the pieces (wood) firmly; maintain control of the saw and it’s direction.
  • Watch out for the saw power cord…before you cut!
  • If you are cutting thinner materials such as 7/16 OSB, lower the depth gauge (saw table) so that it will cut smoother.

Chopsaw and Power Mitre Saw

  • Make certain your work piece is firmly clamped or held up against saw fence.
  • Never reach across saw path to remove a small piece, even when the saw is slowing down.
  • Longer pieces should be supported by a helper or some other means.
